The product design process from ideation to a pilot build follows a structured flow, often viewed as iterative and non-linear, to ensure the final product effectively solves a user problem and meets business goals.

1. Research and Ideation

This foundational stage focuses on deeply understanding the user and the market context.

User Research: Conduct interviews, surveys, and observations to gather insights into user needs, pain points, and behaviours. This helps build empathy and create user personas.
Market/Competitor Analysis: Analyse existing solutions and market trends to identify gaps and opportunities for differentiation.
Define Requirements: Translate research findings into a clear set of functional and non-functional requirements and success metrics for the product.
Brainstorming: Generate a wide range of potential solutions and ideas.
Idea Screening: Evaluate ideas based on feasibility, alignment with goals, and potential value, then shortlist the most promising ones.
Wireframing/Sketching: Create low-fidelity visual outlines or sketches to map user flows and the basic structure.

2. Concept Development and Prototyping

In this stage, creative solutions are generated and refined into a cohesive product concept.

Concept Development: Refine the basic ideas and convert the design into a detailed product concept, outlining key features, use cases, and the value proposition.
UI/UX Design: Develop detailed user interface designs, visual elements, and interaction flows.
Prototype Creation: Build an early, working version of the product (a clickable digital mock-up or a physical model) to test assumptions and functionality. Prototypes can range from low to high fidelity.
Business Analysis: Assess the commercial viability, potential revenue, and costs associated with the concept to build a detailed business case.

3. Design, Verify and Iteration

The chosen concept is turned into tangible and interactive models to visualize how it will look and function. The prototype is tested with real users to gather feedback and make improvements before full development.

Engineering Design: Convert the selected concept to a manufacturable product by adding elements with DFM, DFA thoughts applied to it. This also confirms that the product is economically viable and costs are under control.
Usability Testing: Observe target users as they interact with the prototype to identify friction points, usability issues, and design flaws.
Gather Feedback: Collect qualitative and quantitative feedback from users and internal stakeholders.
Iteration and Refinement: Based on the feedback, iterate and refine the design. This loop of testing and improving continues until the design is validated and meets the desired user needs and business goals. Create DVVP based on the studies conducted.

4. Development, Validate and Pilot Build

Once the design is finalized and verified, the actual product is built and released to a limited audience.

IP Rights: The product is checked for IP rights and conflicts if any on the patent front. Necessary documents are created for floating it through patent office for Design & utility patents
Development: Engineers build the final product, often in iterative sprints, based on the finalized design specifications. Sometimes soft tooling is made and many times harder tools are created
Packaging Development: Develop the concepts and prototype of the individual carton box and graphics based on the branding strategy, perform testing based on applicable standards. Be compliant with the legal metrology standards. Also support on the master carton based on business needs
Quality Assurance (QA): The product undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it functions correctly, is secure, and is reliable. DVVP&R is created for future quality testing and records
Pilot Program/Market Testing: The product is launched to a select group of early adopters or a limited market segment in a controlled environment. The goal of the pilot is to validate the product in a real-world setting, test support structures, and gather final insights before a full-scale launch.

This flow ensures that the product is user-centric, technically feasible, and commercially viable, minimizing risk before a full public release.
